When a person suffers from emotional reasoning they believe whatever their feelings are telling them, even if the facts of the situation contradict those feelings. Emotional reasoning places the burden of all situations on oneself. You are not able to view situations objectively, only through the lens of your own feelings. Feelings become facts and interactions with others and with self become increasingly difficult.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This distortion doesn\u2019t ask, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat is real?\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 it says, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf I feel it, it must be real.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotional reasoning fabricates the belief that what you feel must reflect what\u2019s true.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I feel <\/span><b>unworthy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, unloved and afraid,\u00a0 then I must <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> unworthy, no one loves me, <\/span><b>and<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there must be danger near.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that\u2019s a trap. Your emotions are real \u2014 but they are not always <\/span><b>right<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Feelings are signals, not verdicts. If the enemy can trick you into trusting feelings over faith, he can quietly turn you away from truth. And soon, your emotions become the courtroom \u2014 and your heart, the judge.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you ever felt something so deeply that it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be true \u2014 even when the facts said otherwise? That\u2019s emotional reasoning. It\u2019s another cognitive distortion used by the enemy to twist how we see the world, ourselves, and God.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This mental foothold convinces us that our emotions are facts, and once that lie settles into our spirit, it becomes incredibly hard to see clearly. Emotional reasoning puts <\/span><b>you<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the center of truth \u2014 rather than <\/span><b>God<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Distortion in Real-Life:<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at a few examples of how this distortion can manifest itself in real life situations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>The Parent<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sees their child with a friend of the opposite gender and feels as though they are engaged in a romantic relationship. Instead of asking questions or giving their child space, they accuse them and cause damage to the trust of their relationship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>The Employee<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isn\u2019t invited to a meeting. Feels excluded. Assumes they\u2019re disliked.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdraws, stops contributing \u2014 and their performance drops, all because of a feeling.<\/span><\/p><p><b>The Teacher<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gets a critical email from a parent that causes them to feel personally attacked. This causes the teacher to feel that the whole class hates them.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They then spend their days spiraling, when the note was simply about one bad grade.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy\u00a0<\/b><\/h3><p>Imagine a student going for a midterm. They start to feel anxious and take this anxiety as proof they will fail. As a result they stop studying, what is the point, they are going to fail anyway. The Bible speaks directly to this trap of the heart:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Jeremiah 17:9 \u2013 \u201cThe heart is deceitful above all things\u2026\u201d<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Isaiah 55:8\u20139 \u2013 \u201cMy thoughts are not your thoughts\u2026\u201d<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>1 John 3:20 \u2013 \u201cIf our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts.\u201d<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samson ignored red flags because of his emotional attachment to Delilah. Despite her repeated betrayals, his feelings kept him bound \u2014 until it cost him everything. His emotions overruled his reason. And his downfall wasn\u2019t physical first \u2014 it was <\/span><b>mental<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God never asked us to follow our feelings \u2014 He asks us to follow <\/span><b>Him<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is not emotional whiplash \u2014 He is stable, merciful, unchanging.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When feelings rise up and whisper lies, God\u2019s truth speaks louder:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI feel alone \u2014 but <\/span><b>God said He would never leave me<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI feel anxious \u2014 but <\/span><b>God gave me a sound mind<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI feel unloved \u2014 but <\/span><b>Jesus died because I am deeply loved<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your feelings don\u2019t get the final word. God does.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Healing Tools and Thought Practices<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some spiritual and practical tools to disarm emotional reasoning:<\/span><\/p><p><b>Name It<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do I feel right now? Where did it come from?<\/span><\/p><p><b>Fact Check It<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the actual evidence for this feeling?<\/span><\/p><p><b>Truth Over Feeling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak a Scripture that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contradicts<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the lie. Write it. Say it. Believe it.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Ask the Source<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIs this thought from God, myself, or the enemy?\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><b>Journal the Disconnect<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do I feel?<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does God\u2019s Word say?<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is actually true?<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example Scripture<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><strong>2 Corinthians 10:5 \u2013 \u201cWe take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><h2><b>Let\u2019s Connect<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you caught yourself believing something simply because you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">felt<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it deeply?
