A should statement can be applied to every part of a person\u2019s life, so sufferers are at a high risk of having anxiety or depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Should&#8221; is a word that wears a mask of motivation but often hides a whip of shame.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The enemy uses <\/span><b>should statements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to make you feel inadequate, behind, and guilty. These statements set impossible standards, and when we don\u2019t meet them, we condemn ourselves or others.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShould\u201d statements are mental guilt traps wrapped in productivity language. They sound like ambition, but they feel like shame.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI should be further along.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI should be married by now.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI should be better.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These thoughts aren\u2019t motivational \u2014 they\u2019re judgmental. They set impossible standards and condemn you for not meeting them.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The enemy uses \u201cshoulds\u201d to keep you stuck in cycles of pressure, performance, and self-criticism \u2014 never grace.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">What starts as an inner critique becomes a source of guilt, pressure, and frustration \u2014 pulling you out of the peace of God and into the prison of perfectionism.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Distortion in Real-Life:<\/b><\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Let\u2019s look at a few examples of how this distortion can manifest itself in real life situations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>High School Student:<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In a difficult class thinks, \u201cI should already know this.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Struggles in silence instead of asking for help. Feels shame for needing support \u2014 and falls further behind.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Employee:<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI should be a manager by now.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Overworks, burns out, and resents coworkers \u2014 not realizing timing is different for everyone.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Parent:<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI should never lose my temper.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Has one tough moment with their child, and spirals into self-hate.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Shame becomes louder than love.<\/span><\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Self-Fulfilling Prophecy<\/b><\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Imagine a young parent, starting out with their new child and after seeing other families in the park they start to think, \u201cI should do things like them, they parent better than me.\u201d This causes the parent to resent themselves, and then their child. This causes the parent to be harsher with their child and not be able to bond emotionally, because they are lost in all of the self imposed \u2018shoulds\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>God\u2019s Response:<\/b><\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romans 8:1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 \u201cThere is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah 55:9<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 \u201cAs the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm 46:10<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 \u201cBe still, and know that I am God.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God never measures us by what we \u201cshould\u201d have done \u2014 He sees where we are and loves us there.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> His grace is present, not performance-based. His timing is not our timeline.<\/span><\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Healing Tools and Thought Practices:<\/b><\/span><\/h3><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Spot the Should:<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Write down your \u201cshould\u201d statements.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ask: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whose voice is this? Is this from God \u2014 or guilt?<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Scripture Reframe:<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Replace \u201cI should\u2026\u201d with \u201cGod is\u2026\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Example:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI should be stronger by now.\u201d \u2192 \u201cGod is my strength.\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm 28:7<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Truth Journal Prompt:<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">What \u201cshould\u201d is holding you hostage?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">What does grace say instead?<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Affirmation:<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI release the timeline. I walk in grace.
